Breastfeeding and Galactagogues

Breastfeeding and Galactagogues

Breastfeeding is amazing once it’s established and working well.  However, at first it can be really hard, which I think is something that people don’t tell you much about before you become a mum. I remember using my hypnobirthing breathing techniques every time my little Truffle Pig latched on for the first few days.

Whether it’s that your baby can’t latch properly, your milk doesn’t come in quickly, or you’re struggling with tongue tie, you may be looking for anything to help ease your breastfeeding journey. You’re both learning, and as with anything, your body is also adapting physically. It gets easier, and most women really enjoy it, as well as science telling us it’s the best thing for our babies.

There’s no magic solution to immediately increase your milk supply, and it’s important to explore all options. Try increasing feeds, on demand nursing, skin to skin, expressing. Breastfeeding is hungry work. If your milk supply is still low, our cookies may be able to help.

Whilst there is limited empirical evidence into the efficacy of foods in helping lactation and milk supply, some key ingredients have been used for centuries to assist women with milk making, across the world in different cultures. These ingredients are called ‘galactagogues’.

The fundamentals of a breastfeeding diet are to eat often, and to eat well. Choose wholegrains and dark leafy greens. Fennel, Chickpeas and nuts (especially almonds) are brilliant. Certain spices are known for their milk boosting qualities: fenugreek, fennel, cumin, caraway, ginger.

Our cookies not only taste delicious, but they are packed with some of the most effective of these 'galactagogue' ingredients, oats, brewers yeast and flaxseed.

Oats are one of our most nutritious foods. They contain proteins, vitamins, minerals and trace elements that nourish the nerves, support the metabolism of fats and uplift the spirit. Who doesn’t conjure up happy images when presented with a steaming bowl of creamy porridge. In traditional medicine, both the seed and the leaf are used.

Brewers Yeast is frequenty used as a supplement to boost milk supply, with mothers reporting significant boosts to their supply. Mothers sometimes say that they feel more energetic when they consume brewers yeast, and it can have a positive effect on your mood. Eaten alone, it’s pretty pungent and bitter, so how you use it, and using the right amount, is important. In our cookies, the pungent flavour is masked by some of the other tasty ingredients we use, including chocolate, raspberry, peanut butter and coconut.

Flaxseed and Flaxseed oil has phytoestrogens that can influence milk production, as well as containing essential fatty acids that improve the fat content and quality of your breast milk. Try using it for baking, sprinkling on your porridge or stirring into your yogurt.

We make our tasty, nourishing cookies for breastfeeding Mamas, because you deserve a treat. We may as well ensure that when eating milk boosting foods, they are as tasty as possible.  So many of our customers and friends have reported great success when using them, so we can only hope they will help you too. Truffle Pig treats can be enjoyed by people other than breastfeeding Mamas, but shhh…we won’t tell if you want to keep them all to yourself
